2010 Baseball Tournament 8s Team

July 7, 2010:  WW Takes 2nd Place in Sunnybrae Tournament

After an exciting run to the championship game, one of our two West Windsor 8 year old teams lost 9-5 to Robbinsville in the finals to place second out of sixteen teams in the Sunnybrae Early 8 Tournament.

Having won two of three games in pool play, including impressive 10-0 and 13-5 victories over Ewing and Millstone, the team advanced to the quarter-finals against previously unbeaten East Windsor. In an action-packed game on July 5 that came down to the final inning, our boys won 13-9. The team got strong starting pitching from Luke Potts and middle relief from Bredan Kerins and Ian Muni to keep the game close throughout. The team also hit the ball well, scoring 4 runs in each of the first two innings. Multiple hit games were turned in by Brendan Kerins and Conor Lundy to help lead the offensive attack. The score was tied 9-9 going into the sixth inning, when William Raeter hit a bases loaded triple to put our team in the lead for good. Pitcher Jalon Mack shut the door in the bottom of the sixth to end the two and a half hour game, and the team advanced to the semi-finals.

On July 7, West Winsdor defeated host Sunnybrae in the semi-finals, 10-8. Starting pitcher Ian Muni gave the team exactly what it needed on the mound, turning in a great performance and getting the team into the fourth inning with a 7-3 lead. In his first pitching performance on the tournament, Conor Lundy did an outstanding job, giving up only 2 runs and bringing the team into the sixth inning with a 10-5 lead. Our offense was firing on all cylinders, with a five run first inning that was highlighted by singles by Ian Muni, Luke Potts, and William Raeter, and doubles by Austin Munsch and Conor Lundy.  Ian and Luke each had two-hit games.   Having made an outstanding running catch in right field the inning before, Austin came on in the sixth inning to pitch well and seal the victory for our team. In an exciting finish to the game, the final out was recorded with the bases loaded and the score 10-8. Second Baseman Chris Bluni fielded a grounder heading towards the middle and threw to First Baseman Brendan Kerins to nip the Sunnybrae runner at first and end the game, giving us a berth in the Championship.

In the Finals against Robbinsville, the team’s championship run came to an end before a large crowd on July 9. Despite strong starting pitching by Luke Potts and relief pitching by Brendan Kerins and Jalon Mack, the team fell behind 6-0 and couldn’t catch up. We mounted a comeback to bring the score within 6-4, but ended up falling short 9-5. Despite the loss, solid hitting performances were turned in by several of the boys. Ian Muni turned in his fourth multi-hit game of the tournament. Other solid hits came from Luke Potts, Brendan Kerins, Austin Munsch, Brian Spencer, and Noah Leland. Nicky Ryan continued to hit the ball hard, testing the Robbinsville defense twice. In the sixth inning, Jalon Mack energized the crowd with a blast to left field that turned into an RBI double.    After all the excitement of our first tournament, we are looking forward to the Nottingham Tournament which starts on July 17. A big thank you goes out to all the fans that came out to Sunnybrae to support our team.
